Oakland Museum Hip-hop Exhibit

Today was an interesting day for me, as I visited the Oakland Museum to visit the hip-hop exhibit. It was a wonderful exploration of how hip-hop has slowly, or rather, quickly, snuck into mainstream culture.

Hip-hop isn't just music, dance, art, or fashion. It's a wonderful combination of all of those things. It rose from the ashes of systematic mistreatment of African Americans.

I was able to listen to many classic hip-hop tracks, such as 'Neurotic Society' by Lauryn Hill and 'Love Yourz' by J.Cole. I also played with records and beat pads.

  1. I loved seeing you in Oakland. How is my "recent" past already history? <3 I hope we kick off our Deerwood Institute eastward roadtrips at the Oakland Museum every year.

  2. Before I forget, we passed an American Indian Model School and briefly wondered what it might be. It seemed to be a charter school and we talked about charter schools, what problem they exist to solve, the controversy about charter schools. You speculated that the school might be connected to the "Indian Schools" that were part of forced assimilation and connected to genocidal campaigns against native people. Here is a link to the school we saw: https://www.aimschools.org/

Looking over the school, what do you see there? What do you think might be happening, which things do you see (codes?) that hint or confirm what you think the school is about?
